A DOODLING Squirrel
North and south pole … Right and left side of the brain … Geeks/nerds and artists … We always think about opposites when we hear those words. I have a confession: I’m a mathematician. And a IT girl. But also, I’m a DOODLER. Why do I scream when I say doodler? Because I’m proud to say those words :) and I’m not ashamed to let the world know it.
When I was little I liked to read comic books and copy stuff from there... I wasn't even so bad, but I never pursued it seriously. There were always more important things and I was lacking talent, so I always had this feeling floating in the back of my mind, a feeling of being an imposter. And I left drawing to the ‘real’ artist. I was hibernating like this for years... and then I discovered that colouring relaxed me. While studying for exams I always had a bar of chocolate and some colour pencils around. You can say it was my first aid kit :) With time I gave myself one important permission - to draw lines and if they look like some kid draw them let them be. They were making ME happy, so who cares if they are not perfect or look like ‘the real thing’.
I stopped with all of this when I started to work. I was supposed to be a grown-up then and they don’t play around. What I noticed was that when I needed to think about something and brainstorm it, colour pencils or markers would pop-up.
I had occasional attempts to draw something or to learn how to draw, but I always stopped feeling discouraged. I had piles of books about drawing but never got through them for more than a few pages. So after years of being on that roller coaster, last summer I started to doodle. And doodle... and doodle... and I’m feeling damn great :)
As best things in life often come by chance, so it was with me hosting Doodle-le-do Zagreb. I saw Doodle-le-do site, but I was too shy to apply. So, when Natalia contacted me a few days later and proposed we do this, I hopped on the wagon. Other then fear of the unknown there was no reason why I shouldn’t do this. I love to meet new people, I love to draw, I like a glass of something nice .. this is a perfect combination.
That’s my story. Doodle-le-do Zagreb is launching on September 23rd, 2015. You can find us at “Raspjevane kokoši”. If you tell people ‘I can’t draw’ but something in you is itching and you smile when you see pencils, colours, markers,… come – this is where you belong :) Let’s unlock you ;)
